Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, who won ice dance gold and silver at the last two Olympics, must decide before the 2016-17 season if they will return to competition, according to the London (Ont.) Free Press.

“It’s certainly on our minds, and it’s definitely in our sights,” Virtue said Tuesday, according to the newspaper. “We talk about [a comeback] a lot, and we’re constantly thinking about it. That’s very motivating, too.”

Virtue and Moir haven’t competed since taking silver behind U.S. rivals and training partners Meryl Davis and Charlie White at the Sochi 2014 Olympics.

Davis and White also haven’t competed since Sochi. White said in March that their absence will extend through next season, and they haven’t decided if they will come back at all.

Moir said a comeback would not be about “unfinished business” after being beaten in Sochi. One ice dance couple has earned medals at three Olympics — Soviets Marina Klimova and Sergey Ponomarenko from 1984 through 1992.

“We’re probably the most annoying story in Canadian sports saying we don’t know what’s next, but we’re being honest,” Moir said, according to the report. “We have days we wake up and say, ‘Yeah, we need another [Olympic] shot.’ There are other days we love doing these other parts of our lives. I don’t think we’ll ever lose that feeling of wanting to be at the Olympic Games and represent Canada. I’ll feel that way for the rest of my life.

“We have to be realistic. We’re not coming back unless it’s to become Olympic champions again. If we’re in, we’re in. You’ll see in the next eight months or so getting into better shape than I was at the [last] Games so I’m ready to pounce if that’s an option.

“There’s no way it’ll be me being fat and out of shape holding us back.”
